The Facts on Oil Sands

The Facts on Oil Sands | Energy

Energy supply

Fueling North America

Canada’s oil sands are uniquely positioned to contribute to meeting the growth in energy demand. In North America, oil sands production provides secure and reliable supply, reducing reliance on foreign imports and providing economic growth in both Canada and the U.S.

Production

In just over 35 years, Canadian crude oil production has increased by 2.2 million barrels/day due to the growth in supply from oil sands.

In 2014, 58% of Canada's crude oil production was from the oil sands.

3.7 million barrels/ day is approximately twice times Canada’s current oil consumption.

Security of supply

Supplying energy to Canada and beyond generates economic benefits across the country. For global partners, importing energy from Canada makes sense. Canada is politically stable, infrastructure is robust and environmental standards are high.
