Jobs

In addition to paying significant royalties and taxes, the oil sands industry is a major employer and creates jobs throughout North America.

905,000 jobs*

Employment in Canada as a result of new oil sands investments is expected to grow from 75,000 jobs in 2010 to 905,000 jobs in 2035 with 126,000 jobs in provinces other than Alberta.

*Jobs are direct, indirect and induced.

The goods, materials and services used to construct and operate in situ oil sands projects, mines and upgraders come from across North America. Many of the components – tires, trucks, gauges, valves, pumps etc. – are produced in Central and Eastern Canada.

Alberta

While Alberta receives about 94% of the economic benefits from oil sands, the economic impact across Canada is significant.


Number of companies that have direct business with the oil sands - provinces outside Alberta

Job Creation

For every direct job created in Alberta's oil sands industry, approximately one direct and one induced job will be created in the rest of Canada.
